Plays represented by Otavina Literary Agency

Plays that the Agency offers are written by Aleksey Slapovsky – a dramatist with solid background and long history of success performances in theatres all over the world. Most of his plays are tragicomedies or as the Author calls few of them “comi-tragedies” that are based on comic situations and dialogues through which though alarming or tragic overtones could be heard. That’s why different directors stage the same plays in a very wide diapason - from a pure comedy to existential drama.

The nature of author’s plays is very theatrical. Even if they raise serious issues and deep questions they are always spectacular and inversed to imagination of the audience. Slapovsky thinks that the theatre itself, besides pure entertaining or opposite direct referring to souls, minds and consciences; being shocking, scandal, educative, etc – the theatre is obliged to bring the spectaculars – joy.

Aleksey Slapovksy play "My little Cherry Orchard"

Play “My Little Cherry Orchard”, most famous and frequently staged. Nostalgic comedy set in contemporary times with amusing references to Chekhov’s classic play.

"The Little Cherry Orchard" by Aleksey Slapovsky

This is the basic principle of the dramatist: Theatre is a feast and celebration already because in daily routine life people never communicate and relate to each other as close as they do in the audience. Although during such feasts scandals and murders can happen - as they often do in Slapovsky’s plays.

Speaking of subject matter and theme - the main is a search for our identity in this complicated world. The characters of the plays are trying to understand who they are today, what’s happening with them and the world that they are a part of.

Variability, trying on masks, personalities and characters – this is a carnival nature of the theatre which is very important for the dramatist. Slapovsky says: “It is a theatre of imagination because life does not exist by itself – it’s our imagining perception of it”.

The categories below are conditional and authorial; all plays can be staged in both drama and comedy according to director’s vision and theatre’s preferences.

  • Comedies: Naked Room; My Little Cherry Orchard; Birth; Love; Jealousy (Car);
  • Dramas: Perception of a Theatre; Play 27
  • Comi-tradegies: A Woman Above Us; Not Like the Rest
  • Phantasmagoria: Oh
  • “Reality-show”: Condemned House
  • Modern Parable: Fool (Don’t Let Me Kill You)
